Well it is time to say goodbye to… WordPress

You may have noticed that I have been a little silent on the Blog front for the last month or so, even missing my usual Christmas wished to my readers – for which I am very sorry – and to make up for it – I hope that you all had a (belated) Merry Christmas. I have not however given up on Blogging or writing – I have been busy moving this blog to a new hosted platform.

It is with great pleasure that I can now announce that my new site is up and running and located here: http://www.telnetport25.com

Alas this does mean that this will be my LAST post on this Blog – if you have enjoyed the content that I have published here, please update your bookmarks and RSS feed to the new site above.

You might have a few questions at this point – therefore allow me to answer them below (these are based upon my own personal thoughts during the migration process)

Why have you moved?

WordPress is a fantastic platform – especially with the release of 2.7 and I would recommend it to anyone whom is considering Blogging, however I really wanted more control over the “look and feel” elements of the site.

I have also noted that as some of my articles have become more detailed and focussed more on the complexities of Exchange and Server configuration – they have grown larger – therefore this has had a performance hit on the blog. The new platform as it is content management based will allow for me to automatically priorities and archive articles dynamically. I can also have full control of what is published on the home page.

I also wished to buy the domain name “telnetport25.com” and that was pretty much the trigger point for me where I thought “well if I am going to go through the pain of rebranding the site with a Domain Name – I might as well switch providers” as well.

Other reasons as to why I have moved include:

  • The amount of storage space that I now have available to me has increased exponentially
  • I have full control of the backups for my site – which include the templates which make up the site as well as the database itself
  • I have a number of new features which I can bring online

What about your existing content?

I have moved the most popular content from this blog over to the new site – there are still a number of back links to this site from the new which I will not be changing – therefore this Blog will still exist for a while yet (perhaps forever – or until WordPress delete it!).

I will also (no doubt) still use this site for reference purposes and indeed there is a permanent link on the home page of the new site to this Blog.

What do you plan to do in the future?

Well I will obviously still be covering Exchange Server – however I would like to open the coverage of the site to other Microsoft based technologies that I work with very closely – for example SQL server, Windows 2008, and Active Directory – I also wish to look more at third party applications that I make use of – for example NAI GroupShield and Enterprise Vault. I would also like to cover more on server hardware.

Essentially I would like to expand the scope of what I talk about and leave it up to you folks to tell me if you like it!

So what about the articles that you have not finished – e.g. iSCSI and Segregation?

They will now be finished on the new site – I have migrated the previous parts over to the new site already.

So I would like to wrap this final post on WordPress up by thanking ALL OF YOU whom have followed me here from the bottom of my heart and hope that you will continue to read my rambles over on http://www.telnetport25.com

  1. I’d have to say that you don’t know much about wordpress if you think it cannot keep up with dynamic content or your look and feel requirements. supercache is more than capable of handling your long page articles. As for the look and feel…even I am able to work with templates and CSS and I’m not very good with programming. I’ve found wordpress to be the best and most dynamic platform on which to base any content management system. I hope you have success with moving off of it…but I don’t think it is a good move.

  2. Thanks, the slowness was one of a few reasons given, yes I know that you can edit the CSS – but you have to pay for it (and considering that I was looking to pay for a domain name and perhaps some hosting – what was the point) and indeed you cannot edit the site look and feel of the template (aside from the CSS) unless you go for either hosting your own wordpress site or going with a hosting partner – remember I am (was on WordPress.com). In terms of moving off it – I have done my research and the platform that I have found suites me and indeed my readers from both a content management solution and relaible hosting.

  3. [...] the new site… Hiya all (Happy New Year) – although I said goodbye to WordPress in my last post – I did not take into account my readers whom read this site mainly via RSS (sorry folks) whom [...]

  4. Wow, you switched from WordPress to Joomla? Interesting… a step backwards actually.

But, nevertheless, its the content I come for.
